The Town of West Springfield, DPW conducted a water main flushing program and water system evaluation that included the operation of water gate and hydrants during the period of September 30, 2008 through the Spring of 2009 at various location of town.
The DPW enlisted Wachs Utility Services and Tighe & Bond Consulting Engineers to integrate utility information into the Town’s existing asset management system and design and plan a unidirectional flushing program (UDF) for the town’s water distribution system. This program serves four primary purposes:
1. Locate, assess, test, GPS map and document information on the valves and hydrants in the water distribution system through hands-on field activities. More Information
3. Generate work orders utilizing CarteGraph WORKdirector to identify those assets that require repair and provide an estimate of the time, materials, manpower and costs associated with making those repairs. All repairs are to be made under a separate contract. More Information
4. Using the information gathered in previous steps, create flushing plans and procedures, which will be utilized (under a separate contract) to clean the water mains by a systematic process of flushing sequences with the water being discharged from fire hydrants. Flushing of pipes to dislodge and remove mineral deposits, sediments and biological deposits that have accumulated in the water mains. More Information
The Town of West Springfield is dedicated to provide clean water to its customers and this comprehensive evaluation of the Town’s distribution system is one step toward a more effective and safe water system.
Flushing the water mains allows the Town of West Springfield to maintain water quality, protect public health, and ensure adequate water pressure in the pipelines.
No disruption of water service is expected in the area during the flushing program. But some consumers may experience temporary discoloration of their water.
If residents experience any change in water quality after this flushing or have questions about the programs, they should contact Deputy Director of Water, Jeffrey Auer at (413) 263-3230.
