The Park & Recreation Department offers swimming lessons in the following levels. All lessons are held at West Springfield Memorial Pool.
Level 1
Introduction to Water Skills
Purpose - To help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely.
Objectives:
1.)Exhale underwater, blow bubbles, through mouth and nose for 3 seconds.
2.)Open eyes underwater, pick up a submerged object held at arms length for 2 times.
3.)Explore arm and hand movements while treading in chest-deep water with support.
4.)Swim on front using any combination of arm and leg actions while supported for 5 feet.
5.)Discuss water safety rules.
6.) Discuss how to use a lifejacket & demonstrate wearing one in the water.
Level 2
Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Purpose - To provide students with
opportunities for success with fundamental skills.
Objectives:
1.)Blow bubbles, submerging head in a rhythmic pattern (bobbing 5 times).
2.) Change direction of travel while paddling on front or back.
3.)Tread water, using arms and leg motions, in chest-deep water.
4.)Swim on front using any combination of arm and leg actions while unsupported for15 feet.
5.)Swim on back using any combination of arm and leg actions for15 feet.
Level 3
Stroke Development
Purpose - To build on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice.
Objectives:
1.)Submerge and retrieve an object (independently) from chest-deep water(3seconds).
2.)Demonstrate rotary breathing with body in a horizontal position (5 times).
3.)Tread in deep water, using hand and leg movements (30 seconds).
4.)Demonstrate each stroke, front crawl (15 yards), back crawl (15 yards), butterfly—kick (15 feet).
5.)Discuss general water safety rules.
